What is Matgo?
Matgo (맞고) is a classic Korean two-player card game played with a 48-card hwatu (화투) deck.
Each player receives 10 cards, and 8 cards are dealt face-up to the field. Players take turns
matching cards from their hand to cards on the field by month, capturing matching pairs.
After playing a card, the active player draws one from the deck, which can also capture field cards.
The goal is to score points by collecting valuable card combinations — and knowing when to call
"Go" (to multiply your score) or "Stop" (to end the round).
Card Types
- Bright (광, Gwang) — The most valuable cards. 5 total (months 1, 3, 8, 11, 12). Scoring starts at 3 Brights.
- Animal (열끗, Yeolkkeut) — Cards depicting animals or objects. 9 total. 5 or more scores 1 pt per card above 4.
- Ribbon (띠, Ddi) — Red, blue, or grass-colored ribbon cards. 10 total. 5 or more scores 1 pt per card above 4.
- Junk (피, Pi) — Low-value cards. 24 total. 9 or more scores 1 pt per card above 8.
- Double Junk (쌍피) — November willow card. Counts as 2 Junk cards.
Special Combinations (Bonuses)
- Godori (고도리) — The three bird Animals: April cuckoo, August geese, November swallow. +5 pts.
- Red Ribbon (홍단) — Ribbons from months 1, 2, and 3. +3 pts.
- Blue Ribbon (청단) — Ribbons from months 6, 9, and 10. +3 pts.
- Grass Ribbon (초단) — Ribbons from months 4, 5, and 7. +3 pts.
Bright Card Scoring
- 3 Brights (no Rain Bright) = 3 pts
- 3 Brights (includes Rain Bright, month 11) = 2 pts
- 4 Brights = 4 pts
- 5 Brights = 15 pts
Go and Stop
When you score at least 1 point on your turn, you must choose to Go or Stop:
- Stop: End the game immediately. If your score is higher than the AI's, you win.
- Go: Continue playing. Each Go declaration adds ×1 to the final score multiplier. (1 Go = ×2, 2 Go = ×3, etc.)
How Scoring Works
- Add up all bonus scores (Brights, Godori, Ribbon sets, Animal count, Junk count).
- Multiply by (Go count + 1).
- The player with the higher final score wins.
Strategy Tips
- Prioritize collecting Bright cards — they score big and their combinations are hard to beat.
- Watch for Godori: securing all three bird Animals (Apr/Aug/Nov) scores a powerful 5 pts.
- Don't get greedy with Go — if the AI is close to scoring, Stop before they overtake you.
- Even Junk cards matter: 9+ Junk is worth points, so don't ignore low cards.

In this game you can call Go up to 3 times, giving a maximum multiplier of ×4.
Why does the Rain Bright reduce the score to 2 pts?

What happens if two field cards share the same month as my played card?
You must choose one of the matching field cards to capture. The other stays on the field.
What if no cards match the drawn card?
The drawn card is placed face-up on the field for future matching.
